Florence, Colorado... "A Great Little Town!"

Water Service Line Inventory Survey

#FFFFFF

On your May 2024 water bill, there's a web link connecting you to the Water Service Line Inventory Survey.

We'd appreciate your help in completing this to maintain the quality of our water system for CDPHE. See our FAQ below for more information! Thanks for your help!

What is this survey?

The City of Florence is asking residents to assist with maintaining the high quality of our water system by completing this survey on water line types. This water service line inventory is part of a nationwide initiative from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) being administrated in Colorado by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE).

How long will the survey take to complete?

The survey should not take longer than five (5) minutes to complete. Please note you may have to enter your crawl space or find the location where your water service line enters your home from the outside in order to complete the survey. More information on this process is included in the survey link.

Why do we need your help?

CDPHE is requiring cities across Colorado to complete their lead service line inventories by October of 2024. As this survey focuses on the service lines between the meter and the home, asking residents to complete these surveys and self-report their water service line types potentially prevents residents from needing to allow the City to gain access to their homes to gather this required information.

How will the information be used?

After the survey is complete, CDPHE will require cities to develop a lead service line replacement plan based on survey results. No details of this plan are available at this time, as all aspects of the plan, including if it is even necessary to develop, will be based solely upon survey results.

Does the City participating in this survey mean there are dangerous levels of lead in my drinking water?

Not at all. The City of Florence does not produce corrosive water and has had no issues with lead contamination. CDPHE requires regular sampling for lead and copper, and Florence always produces samples that are significantly below the levels permitted by CDPHE regulations, including non-detectable levels of lead and copper in many samples. As stated above, this is part of a nationwide initiative from the EPA being administrated in Colorado by the CDPHE, and is not a reflection of any testing results or other concerns. If you have additional questions, please contact FlorenceWSLI@florencecolorado.org

Paper copies of the survey are available at City Hall, or click below to complete the survey virtually.

April 29, 2024

Update to the shooting incident that occurred in Florence on April 19, 2024. During the course of the investigation, Florence Police officers obtained video footage of the incident. The footage and investigation was handed over to a Florence Police detective, who was able to secure a no bond arrest warrant that was issued on April 25, 2024 for Justin Michael Smith (32), (a resident out of Englewood, Colorado) for the following charges: First degree assault, two counts of Menacing, Reckless endangerment and Unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon. Justin was attending a local wedding reception here in Florence on the night of April 19, 2024. The suspect shot the victim, (who is a Florence resident), in the leg after the victim was rummaging through a nearby dumpster. The victim was not breaking in to cars as the suspect originally told Florence Police officers on scene. The Englewood Police Department was contacted, and made aware of the arrest warrant. At no point, was this incident ever an “Officer Involved Shooting” (OIS).

Press Release

Zika Virus

#FFFFFF

Zika and West Nile are transmitted primarily through mosquito bites. To combat those issues and continue to fight the bite, the City of Florence will be spraying and distributing mosquito biscuits to eliminate the larva and adult mosquitoes. We will be spraying Kontrol 4-4, which has a very low odor and is very low at staining if any. This chemical is dispersed at a rate of 5.5 ounces per minute. With the truck driving between 5-7 miles per hour and a 5mph wind the chemical can drift over a 300 feet area. This spraying has been extremely reliable in the past years. Mosquitoes do not become immune to the spray as they only have a 7-day life span.

If we can all work together by following these simple steps, we will also minimize the chances of being bit by mosquitoes:

  1. Protect yourself and family by using the repellent with deet in it.
  2. Limit the time outdoors in the evening and early morning hours.

  3. Changing your outdoor lighting from bright white to a dull yellow should keep the attraction to a minimum.

  4. Dispose of any stagnant water on your property; i.e. tires, buckets, puddles, and swimming pools.

Public Works will begin spraying and putting out biscuits starting in the middle of April and continue running until the middle of September. If 5.5 ounces of the Kontrol 4-4 is not sufficient, we can go up to 8 ounces per minute. That is as far as we can go according to the rules and regulations but also not limited to one time a week. Schedule will be as follows for 2024:

April 19, 26

May 3, 10, 17, 24, 31

June 7, 14, 21, 28

July 5, 12, 19, 26

August 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

September 6, 13, 20
